My only complaint about this book is that it is listed as [Hardcover] even though it is not. No more new hardcover editions are being printed, so really all the brand-new copies are softcover. I bought this twice from Amazon and twice I received a paperback book even though the receipt says [Hardcover.] That was two or more weeks ago. Then, I just got a book through half.com and it came through Amazon, so I got to see that the error still hadn't been corrected. You could laugh at the fact I got the same book three times, but it would be best if Amazon could fix the product description to say Softcover. When it is corrected, they could take down my negative comment because the book itself is amazing as a text reference. Thank you.
One of the best in print - for study and practice
I've had the experience of using this text as:
(1) An undergraduate student,
(2) A graduate student,
(3) A university instructor, and
(4) A practicing geotechnical engineer. There are other books that are better suited to one of the above (I preferred Coduto's two texts when teaching undergraduate Soil Mechanics or Foundation Design) but this 25+ year-old text is still the best (in print) for all 4 of the above. Even after using it regularly for more than 10 years, I still find bits of information that I hadn't previously. It is a bit more dense than some of the newer texts geared strictly towards undergraduate courses (such as McCarthy, Das) and lacks the pretty pictures of some. But it makes up for that in substance. If used correctly (e.g., don't even attempt Chapter 11 when teaching undergrad soils) it makes a fine teaching tool for both undergraduate AND graduate courses. It also contains enough substance to be useful for the practicing engineer. This, and graduate-course-usefulness, is where other texts currently available fall very short. I have several of Das' books, and McCarthy, as well as many others, on my shelf. They mainly collect dust, while I consult H&K regularly. I understand there's a Second Edition in the near future, which should contain some updated information, including critical state soil mechanics, seismic and liquefied soil mechanics, etc.
Still the best book available for theoretical soil mechanics
I was first introduced to this book as a grad student in the early 80s and I still use it to teach my graduate soil mechanics course today. It is as comprehensive as any soil mechanics text out there. Their treatment of shear strength is magnificent and worth the price of the book alone. There is a tremendous amount of information crammed into this book, but it remains very readable throughout. Some of the other reviews miss the essential point that Holtz and Kovacs is a pure theoretical soil mechanics text, not an applied soils text. You won't get much use out of it on the PE exam, but I guarantee it will help you to better understand soil behavior.

Construction Estimating Using Excel

By Steven J. Peterson
List Price: $104.00
Price: $83.20

Product Description
Construction Estimating with Excel introduces readers to the fundamental principles of estimating and includes drawing sets, real-world exercises, and examples that give beginners critical estimating experience. The book moves step-by-step through the estimating process, discussing the art of estimating, the quantity takeoff, how to put costs to the estimate and how to finalize the bid. It is also the first book to demonstrate how Microsoft Excel can be used to improve the estimating process. Because it introduces spreadsheets as a way of increasing estimating productivity and accuracy, the book can help both beginning and experienced estimators improve their skills. Moves beyond many books to not only talk about takeoff (and the costs of a limited number of building materials), but also the principles behind these calculations. Gives readers a strong foundation so they can transfer basic estimating principles to any building material. Provides an introduction to the basic operation of Excel and discusses how it can be used to improve the estimating process. Includes Excel Quick Tips that demonstrate how to set up Excel worksheets for different types of estimating problems. Offers a variety of sites (a residential garage, a residence and a retail building) where readers can practice estimating skills in a non-threatening environment. Includes fundamental mathematical concepts necessary in estimating. Construction Estimators

Waste of money
I bought this book at $80. Seems there was a CD? Never found it. The book did make a few tips here and there, but the long paragraphs made me unable to get them. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who needs practical applications (you will lose your shirt...). The Excel part is an disappointment, too. One chapter was written like a Microsoft quick-reader. Then all subsequent chapters just present formulas without any explanation. Overall, a long and boring read. I would like to value this 800+ page book at price of $30 at most. Can I get a refund? Haha... Rumours on the street are saying DeWalt will have a new Estimating handbook this year with good Excel spreadsheet coverage. Would be interested in seeing that one.
never got it
I waited and waited and waited and never received it. I was very disapointed. Then I received a note that I wasn't going to get it. It would have been nice to know that sooner. I will never buy from Amazon.com again. Thanks
Not very useful
I am professor of Construction Management and former estimator and project manager. I received a desk copy of this book for my consideration and found it to be tedious and very much useless. Most students know how to use excel and really need to learn how to use a real construction estimating programs like Timberline or MC2. That being said the book is laid out much like the excel handbook from microsoft but without the same thoughtfulness and professionalism. I am sorry but I cannot recommend this book to anyone.

Great book for any civil engineering professional
One of the best water resources books. It covers all major and minor topics in water resources and is a great reference for the PE Exam.
Water Resources Engineering
This book is loaded with good information, but we found errors in key hydraulic formulas, which quickly led me not to trust anything out of the book. The sad part is, this was a required text for an engineering class. Maybe the new edition has remedied the problems, but I wouldn't recommend the edition I bought.
Water Resources at your finger tips!
Larry W. Mays has written an outstanding text that provide students with a complete picture of water resources engineering by integrating the fundamental concepts of fluid mechanics, hydraulics, hydrology, and contaminant transport processes. The material in the text is presented from first principles, is rigorous, is relevant to the practice of water resources engineering, and is reinforced by detailed presetations of design applications. A text worth having next to vintage books on this subject in W-R engineers' library.

Not pleased
This is the wordiest textbook I have ever read. This book could probably be shortened by 100 pages. When I am reading a textbook I would like to get to the point as simply and quickly as possible.
Good resource for me!
I'm employed as Project Manager for a company which fabricates and erects steel framed commercial buildings. When I first began this job, many administrative processes were less-than-ideal. Chapter 17 covers Safety quite well. We have made changes to our documents and breifings which replicate the guidelines within this book! I found Chapter 3 helpful. Change Orders are explained well enough for my needs. Chapter 7 is titled, Project Scheduling. I'd hoped to learn about features and use of common software scheduling programs but instead rec'd a chapter of fairly useless math calculations and symbols which are largley irrelevant in 2007. Hey, software is the way to go! In summary, I found this book to be well written and organized. I doubt it can be PERFECT for each and every Construction Manager but I'm glad this resource is on my shelf!
Short, Grad Level Survey Coursebook
OUCH! ... and OUCH! I've purchased many texts based on reviews, sales rankings and preveiws, but this is my first major burn. With no reviews, I based my purchase on the high sales ranking. But I don't know who would find this a value. It is a high level survey text. Short chapters with min development. I know enough about the subject such that some chapters are total review while others are nowhere near complete for a topic new to a person. Physically short, small text overall - the white matter is 9/16" thick! Even has the audacity to include the "filler" appendices with copies of contracts. Well written with good grammar, lots of graphs etc. so it is obviously a university favorite somewhere, hopefully with an excellent instructor offering lots of additional commentary. But not remotely worth the whopping price, and wish the author would teach me his secret to publishing negotiations. Short of that, send me a check. Next version, add 200 pages and cut the coverage then add some depth. Maybe if I were in a different industry or discipline (e.g. banking, civil) and this was to be used for an MS/PhD elective?
