Product Description
Construction Estimating with Excel introduces readers to the fundamental principles of estimating and includes drawing sets, real-world exercises, and examples that give beginners critical estimating experience. The book moves step-by-step through the estimating process, discussing the art of estimating, the quantity takeoff, how to put costs to the estimate and how to finalize the bid. It is also the first book to demonstrate how Microsoft Excel can be used to improve the estimating process. Because it introduces spreadsheets as a way of increasing estimating productivity and accuracy, the book can help both beginning and experienced estimators improve their skills. Moves beyond many books to not only talk about takeoff (and the costs of a limited number of building materials), but also the principles behind these calculations. Gives readers a strong foundation so they can transfer basic estimating principles to any building material. Provides an introduction to the basic operation of Excel and discusses how it can be used to improve the estimating process. Includes Excel Quick Tips that demonstrate how to set up Excel worksheets for different types of estimating problems. Offers a variety of sites (a residential garage, a residence and a retail building) where readers can practice estimating skills in a non-threatening environment. Includes fundamental mathematical concepts necessary in estimating. Construction Estimators

Waste of money
I bought this book at $80. Seems there was a CD? Never found it. The book did make a few tips here and there, but the long paragraphs made me unable to get them. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who needs practical applications (you will lose your shirt...). The Excel part is an disappointment, too. One chapter was written like a Microsoft quick-reader. Then all subsequent chapters just present formulas without any explanation. Overall, a long and boring read. I would like to value this 800+ page book at price of $30 at most. Can I get a refund? Haha... Rumours on the street are saying DeWalt will have a new Estimating handbook this year with good Excel spreadsheet coverage. Would be interested in seeing that one.
never got it
I waited and waited and waited and never received it. I was very disapointed. Then I received a note that I wasn't going to get it. It would have been nice to know that sooner. I will never buy from Amazon.com again. Thanks
Not very useful
I am professor of Construction Management and former estimator and project manager. I received a desk copy of this book for my consideration and found it to be tedious and very much useless. Most students know how to use excel and really need to learn how to use a real construction estimating programs like Timberline or MC2. That being said the book is laid out much like the excel handbook from microsoft but without the same thoughtfulness and professionalism. I am sorry but I cannot recommend this book to anyone.
